Miniature Works

“While visiting the National Museum in Washington DC, I discovered a room of small french paintings. I was mesmerized with a small 6” x 9” vertical painting by Renoir called Woman standing by a tree. it had every painting element (design, tone, drawing, edges, color, calligraphy, harmony, etc.) needed to be a masterpiece. i loved the fact that is was unfinished and very loose in style.

Creating small works has become a wonderful challenge in my career, as it is my quest for my paintings to stand alone as strong, impressive fine paintings, without all the details and complicated subjects of that of larger works. “ - Howard Rose
